Happy Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

“Remember when MOM was your whole world?  MOMS are magnets.  MOM is WOW upside down.  Give your MOM flowers on your birthday.  Remember the womb.  MOM always has kleenix.  We only get one MOM-we can adopt others.  MOMS are human beans too.  Waltz in the kitchen with MOM.  MOMS are mystical, memorable and marvelous.  Go curl up near your MOM and tell her stories.  Wear chenille bathrobes together.  MOMS worry deep.  Bake cookies and argue gently.  Write down all the reasons you’re mad at her and deal with it.  Make a list of all your favorite things about your MOM.  Play cards together, eat M & M’s and laugh until your cheeks hurt.  Forgive all the old junk.  Call your MOM and tell her you’ll love her forever.  Tell her now.” I read this in the NewsExpress newsletter, in 1997, and it made me cry – it still does.

You could make Putting on the Ritz egg salad tea sandwiches for brunch then take her to the Monrovia Mother’s Day Homes Tour today; tickets will be available at the Monrovia Historical Museum, 742 E. Lemon Avenue, in Recreation Park.

See you there,

Putting on the Ritz

If God had intended us to follow recipes,
He wouldn’t have given us grandmothers.
~Linda Henley

What to do with those leftover hard cooked eggs from Easter?  Why not make deviled eggs or egg salad sandwiches? Here is a recipe if you don’t already have one from your grandmother:

Putting on the Ritz Egg Salad Tea Sandwiches

8 hard-cooked eggs

1/2 cup mayonnaise

salt and pepper to taste

1 tbsp dill

6 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature

20 slices best-quality white bread

Peel eggs and place into a medium bowl.  Slice eggs and then coursely mash them with the back of a fork.  Add mayonnaise, salt, pepper and dill; stir until well blended.  NOTE: The mixture can be refrigerated, covered, up to two days.

Spread butter onto one side of each slice of bread.  Spread the butter side of 10 slices of bread with 2 tablespoons egg mixture.  Top with remaining slices of bread, buttered side down.

Carefully cut the crusts from sandwich with a sharp knife.  Cut in half diagonally, then cut in half again.  This yeilds 10 whole sandwiches, 20 halves or 40 fourths.

Dill is used in European and American recipes.  It is known to have a calming effect on the digestive tract; to cure hiccups, stomach aches, insomnia and bad breath.  Watkins all-natural herbs and spices are packed in a Trademark gold medal tin to preserve their quality,  just $3.69 a can.  Click HERE to order and find more recipes.

Have a wonderful day!
